You may have heard of Mel Robbins. She an inspirational speaker, writer, and businesswoman who has helped many people take control of their lives and find happiness and success.
Her book discusses the “5 Second Rule”, which is a method anyone can follow to take action in the face of fear and to use everyday acts of courage to take the next steps for success in their lives.
There are many different applications for the 5 Second Rule. One universal example of using this rule is the struggle of waking up in the morning. The way the rule is used goes like this: When your alarm goes off in the morning and you are ready to hit snooze, count down from 5 to catch yourself before you go back to sleep. 5-4-3-2-1 – get up!, and take action to get up and start your day.
This same idea can be used to push yourself to exercise, to say no to treats at work, or to speak up when you have something important to say.
I have been using a method similar to the 5 Second Rule for many years, but I never put a name to it until I read this book. Now, when I have to make a customer call I’m not looking forward to; 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Dial the number!. Or when I was nervous to tell my husband that I wanted to have a baby (after years of us both being decidedly against having children); 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – Just tell him. Now that Mel has put a name to this rule for me, I’ve been able to apply it to other areas of my life: cleaning my house, starting up several websites, or cooking a healthy dinner when I really just want to order a pizza.
Mel’s 5 Second Rule helps people find the ability to fight what just comes easily, like sitting in front of the TV after work versus going to the gym; it helps people discover the strength and mindfulness to get out of their comfort zone, reach their goals, and take life to the next level.
I don’t want to completely give up all of her secrets, but you can see testimonials from thousands of people in her book, in reviews of her book online, and on social media. The 5 Second Rule is filled with success stories and anecdotes of how people were able to change their lives using this method. I found it incredibly inspiring to read about people just like me who overcame their circumstances to take a step toward living their best lives in such a simple and effective way.
So if you have goals, but regularly find yourself saying “I’ll start tomorrow”, or “I’ll start at the beginning of next month”, this book may offer some great guidance. Because you may never feel ready. You may never feel like starting. But you can’t let those feelings override what you know needs to be done.
